A Peaceful Stay at Barra Shores

If you’ve been dreaming of a peaceful, private getaway where you can unplug, recharge, and feel totally taken care of, let me introduce you to Barra Shores in Merigomish, Nova Scotia.

There’s something special about finding a place that feels like your own little corner of the world, where you can hear the wind in the trees, smell the salt in the air, and get away from it all for a little while.

Barra Shores offers two unique accommodations: fully accessible 3-bedroom cottage and cozy geodesic dome, each designed with comfort, privacy, and accessibility in mind. Whether you're planning a quiet solo retreat, a couple’s getaway, or a family vacation, there’s something here for everyone.

My Stay at the Dome

For this visit, I stayed in the dome and let me tell you, it was just what I needed. Quiet, cozy, and surrounded by ocean views, it felt like my own little sanctuary and reminded me of home. The dome itself is beautifully furnished with a comfy queen bed, a seating area for reading or journaling, and big windows that frame the trees and water outside.

A heads-up: the dome is separate from the kitchen and bathroom, which are just a few steps away in a private, shed-style building. It might not suit everyone (especially in colder or rainy months), but for me it wasn’t an issue, and it added to the “glamping” vibe of the experience.

The kitchen setup was simple but fully stocked with what I needed for a few easy meals: a hot plate, microwave, BBQ, dishes, and even a kettle for your morning bevvy. I brought some groceries from New Glasgow—soup, fruit, pre-cooked wings, that kind of thing—and balanced it out with takeout from a nearby food truck just 2 minutes away when I didn’t want to lift a finger.

And then there’s the hot tub. Watching the sun dip below the horizon while soaking in a private tub? Bliss.

Need More Space?

If you’re travelling with family or want everything under one roof, the Barra Shores Cottage is a perfect alternative to the Dome. It’s fully accessible and has everything you’d want:

  • 3 bedrooms (2 on the main floor, 1 in a loft with a reading nook and stunning view)

  • An open-concept living and dining area

  • A fully accessible kitchen and bathroom

  • A ceiling hoist for guests with physical disabilities

  • Indoor hot tub and fireplace

  • Barrier-free entrances and wide hallways

Yep, they really thought of everything.

Accessibility Done Right

One thing that truly sets Barra Shores apart is how intentionally inclusive the property is. You’ll find:

  • Barrier-free walking trails and open cement paths

  • Wide accessible parking spots

  • Step-free entrances and wide doorways

  • A Hippocampe beach wheelchair is available at no cost

  • A ceiling hoist and an indoor hot tub in the cottage

These aren’t just checkboxes, they’re clearly part of the heart of this place.

Nearby Gems: Big Island & Food Trucks

One of the best parts of staying at Barra Shores is its location. Barra Shores is just minutes from Big Island, one of Nova Scotia’s most peaceful coastal spots. I didn’t get to explore it as much as I wanted to this time, but it’s officially on my “next time” list. Soft sand, calm waters, and a causeway you can walk at low tide? Yes, please.

Food-wise, the area’s got a growing food truck scene and some local places worth checking out. I picked up takeout one night, which is 2 minutes from the dome. A convenience store with a local NSCL and gas is also located there. (Personally, I stopped in New Glasgow on my way and grabbed groceries.)

Getting There

The property is about 20 minutes from both Antigonish and New Glasgow, making it easy to get to without feeling like you’re in the middle of everything. It’s peaceful and remote without being isolated. It’s the kind of place where you can unplug without feeling completely off the grid.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Bring layers – Even in warmer months, the evenings can be cool near the water. A cozy sweater or light jacket is perfect for enjoying the fire pit or star-gazing.

  • Groceries & essentials – Stock up before you arrive if you want to avoid heading back out. Antigonish and New Glasgow both have full grocery stores and shops.

  • Wi-Fi & connection – If you’re hoping to fully disconnect, this is a great spot to do it. But if you need to stay connected, there is Wi-Fi available and it was great!

  • Book early – With limited accommodations and increasing buzz around this peaceful retreat, dates can fill up fast—especially in summer and early fall.

Who This Is Perfect For

  • Couples looking for a romantic unplugged weekend

  • Solo travelers needing a mental reset

  • Families or groups who want accessibility + comfort

  • Road trippers wanting a scenic, peaceful stop

  • Anyone who appreciates thoughtful design and serene views

A Perfectly Peaceful Getaway

This little retreat truly delivered on everything I was craving: peace, simplicity, and space to just be. Whether you're looking for a solo escape, a quiet couple's weekend, or an accessible family-friendly vacation, Barra Shores has something to offer.

The dome might not be for everyone, especially if you like everything under one roof, but for someone like me who enjoys a bit of rustic charm blended with creature comforts, it was perfect. And for those who need or want more space, the cottage is incredibly well-equipped.

I left feeling rested and already thinking about my next visit!
